Civic Voice and Historic England join forces to explore local historical plaque schemes

Civic Voice and Historic England are pleased to announce an exciting collaboration aimed at understanding more about the impact of the diverse array of local plaque schemes across England and to understand more about the dedicated organisations behind them.

This collaboration and survey come as Historic England prepares to roll out a new government-backed national blue plaque scheme, on behalf of the Department for Digital, Media, Culture, and Sport, scheduled for launch in late May 2024. The scheme will invite members of the public to nominate historical figures and landmarks for consideration, with plans to install 6 to 8 plaques annually.

"From Colchester Civic Society to Wakefield Civic Society, civic organisations have a proud tradition of commemorating historical figures and sites through local plaque schemes," remarked Griff Rhys Jones, President at Civic Voice. "This national initiative aims to complement existing schemes, so it is important for civic organisations and other local organisations to respond."

Historic England seeks to further engage with civic organisations, and the survey will also seek permission to explore further collaboration opportunities. The survey will delve into various aspects of local plaque schemes, including their establishment, management, and impact on communities. Insights gathered will inform efforts to enhance the effectiveness and reach of these schemes.

The survey will take approximately 5 to 10 minutes to complete the mandatory questions. To participate, please fill out the survey at: https://www.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/NationalPlaqueSurvey

"We encourage organisations to collaborate on their responses and share as much information as possible. However, individual responses are also welcomed, so please do share your knowledge of local plaque schemes as we build up a national picture," said Martin Hamilton, Chair of Civic Voice. "Thank you again for sharing your expertise and experience for this research. If you wish, we will be able to provide you with a summary of responses after the survey closes on 12 May 2024."
